Apple Repurchased 269 million shares in H1-2024 – Berkshire Hathaway sold 506 million shares

Berkshire Hathaway sold 116 million Apple shares in Q1-2024. In Q2-2024, this is expected to have increased to approximately 390 million. Apple itself bought back 130 million shares in Q1-2024 through its share buyback program, amounting to $23.5 billion. In Q2-2024, this totaled 139 million shares, amounting to $26 billion.

With that, Berkshire Hathaway brought significantly more Apple shares to the market than Apple itself did buy back in Q2-2024. Despite this, the stock price rose by about 22.8% during this period. Berkshire Hathaway was therefore able to sell its Apple shares quite easily to other buyers.

In recent years, Apple shares yielded significantly more than Berkshire Hathaway shares. Whether it was a good decision for Berkshire to significantly reduce its stake in Apple remains to be seen. For now, the investment company chooses to reduce its exposure to Apple and, without making large new purchases, to increase its cash position.
