As Warren Buffett devotees, we believe that companies are like castles. Castles which were build on unapproachable grounds or with impenetrable defences have withstand the test of time. History tells us that the raids and attacks by Vikings or other old empires were only succesful if the enemy's defences were destructible. 

Whether they are defended by physical or intangible boundaries, a company's moat tells us how prone to disruption the whole castle is. The company's added value, and therefore its viablilty in the future, all depends on the company's moat.
